What is Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP)?

Scalp Micropigmentation, also known as SMP is a cosmetic tattoo designed for those experiencing minor to severe hair loss or balding. SMP creates the illusion of hair follicles/hair growth by implanting microscopic impressions using custom pigments to match each client. SMP can be used to rebuild/form a new hairline or add density to an existing hairline.

Is SMP permanent?

No, SMP is a semi-permanent procedure. Unlike with a regular tattoo where pigment/ink is implanted into the dermal layer of the skin, SMP pigment is placed in the basement membrane of the epidermis (where it connects to the dermis). This layer of skin regenerates and will gradually push the pigment outward. Following your 3rd or final session, touch ups are required every 5 years (on average) depending on various factors such as skin type, sun exposure, client care etc.

What does SMP cost?

Price varies for each client and can range from $250-$5000. Each client is given an individual treatment plan designed for their unique needs. The main factor used to determine price is the level of hair loss and the amount of work required. At MHC we understand the challenges that hair loss can present and we always try to find a solution for every budget. Don't let cost be your determining factor, book a consult today and let's discuss what MHC can do for YOU!

What makes SMP different from a regular tattoo?

In addition to the location and longevity of the ink, SMP pigment is formulated to match the natural colour of hair follicles and will not change colour overtime like a tattoo can. Unlike in a tattoo procedure the needles used are much smaller and implanted pigment is much lighter. SMP is also much less painful than a tattoo, most clients feel minimal to no pain during their procedure.

What hair colours does SMP work for?

ANY! Even those with white, grey or red hair can benefit from SMP. We use Ghost Pigments which offer a variety of colours and neutralizers to allow us to create a custom colour for each client based on their skin type and hair/follicle colour.

Are there any risks?

As with any invasive medical procedure there are some risks associated with the SMP procedure. These risks may include, but are not limited to, infection, allergic reaction, scarring and more. It is always recommended to discuss your concerns with the SMP Artist as well as a doctor if you have specific concerns related to your existing health. Clients will not be denied service for health conditions unless they directly impact the results or present a greater risk to the client themselves.
